I’ll be honest — when I first walked up to Hotel Familia on Tovarenska Street, I wasn’t expecting much from this three-star place. But you know what? Sometimes the unassuming spots surprise you the most. The building has this warm, family-run feel that you immediately sense when you step through the front door, and the staff actually remembers your name after day one.
Location & Getting Around
Being right in the heart of Stará Ľubovňa means you’re basically walking distance from everything that matters. The castle ruins are just a short uphill walk — and trust me, that view over the Poprad River valley is worth the slight climb. What I really appreciated was having decent parking available, which honestly can be a nightmare in these smaller Slovak towns.
The Room Experience
My room was nothing fancy, but it had everything I actually needed — clean linens, a solid shower, and windows that opened properly for fresh mountain air. The beds are surprisingly comfortable for a mid-range place, and the Wi-Fi actually works throughout the building (not always a given in this part of Slovakia). I mean, you’re not getting marble bathrooms or anything, but the space feels well-maintained and thoughtfully arranged.
Food & Dining
The on-site restaurant serves up proper Slovak comfort food — think hearty goulash, schnitzel, and local trout that’s clearly sourced from nearby streams. Breakfast is simple but solid, with fresh bread, local cheeses, and coffee that’s actually decent. The portions are generous, and prices are refreshingly reasonable compared to what you’d pay in Bratislava or Prague.
