First Impressions

Honestly, when I first pulled up to Rural Retreat Transylvania in Gura Râului, I wasn’t quite sure what to expect. The name sounds like something out of a gothic novel, but this four-star gem is actually tucked away in one of Romania’s most peaceful valleys. You know what struck me immediately? The complete silence — no traffic, no city buzz, just the gentle sound of the Râului stream that literally runs right past the property.

Location & Setting

The location is pretty remarkable, actually. Gura Râului sits in this gorgeous valley where the Carpathian foothills roll into farmland, and you’re surrounded by traditional Romanian countryside that feels completely untouched by modern development. I mean, the nearest “big” town is about 20 minutes away, which gives you an idea of how remote this feels. What I loved is that you can take these amazing walks right from the hotel — there are old shepherd paths that wind up into the hills, and the locals I met were incredibly welcoming.

The Accommodation

My room was in the main building, which they’ve restored beautifully while keeping all the original character intact. The wooden beams overhead, the thick stone walls — it feels authentically Transylvanian without being kitschy about it. The bed was seriously comfortable (I’m picky about this), and I actually appreciated that they didn’t go overboard with modern tech everywhere. Sometimes you just want to disconnect, you know?

Dining & Local Flavors

The restaurant here deserves special mention because they’re doing something really thoughtful with local ingredients. The chef sources everything from nearby farms — the lamb, the vegetables, even the cheese comes from shepherds in the surrounding hills. I had this incredible ciorbă de burtă (tripe soup) that was honestly better than what I’ve had in Bucharest restaurants. Breakfast was simple but perfect — fresh bread, local honey, and eggs that were clearly from very happy chickens.

Why Guests Love It

What really sets this place apart is how it manages to feel both remote and comfortable at the same time. The staff — there aren’t many of them, but they’re genuinely passionate about the region and full of suggestions for hidden spots to explore. With a 9.8 rating, it’s clear I’m not the only one who fell for this place. It’s perfect if you want to experience rural Romania without roughing it, and honestly, after a few days here, you’ll understand why Transylvania has such a hold on people’s imaginations — though for all the right reasons.
