First Impressions

When I first pulled up to Drevenica Luki in Ždiar, I honestly wasn’t sure what to expect from this three-star place tucked away in the High Tatras. But you know what? Sometimes the best surprises come in the most unassuming packages. This traditional Slovak wooden lodge sits right at the foot of the mountains, and there’s something about the hand-carved details and flower boxes that immediately tells you the owners actually care about this place.

The Setting

Ždiar is one of those mountain villages that feels like Slovakia’s best-kept secret — well, sort of. It’s becoming more popular, but it still has that authentic feel where locals nod hello and kids ride bikes down the main road. The drevenica (that’s Slovak for a traditional wooden house) is perfectly positioned for hiking the Belianske Tatras, and I mean perfectly — you can literally see the trailheads from the property. What really got me though was how quiet it gets here at night, especially if you’re coming from any major city.

Inside the Lodge

The room I stayed in had this wonderful blend of rustic charm and modern comfort that’s surprisingly hard to pull off. The wood-paneled walls and traditional Slovak textiles gave it character, but the Wi-Fi was solid and the bathroom was completely renovated. There’s a small kitchenette area that’s actually useful — not just decorative like in some places — and the beds are genuinely comfortable. I appreciated that they didn’t go overboard trying to make it feel like a fancy hotel; instead, they embraced what it is.

Local Experience

Here’s where Drevenica Luki really shines — they know their area inside and out. The family running this place grew up here, and they’ll point you toward hiking trails that aren’t in the guidebooks yet. There’s a small restaurant on-site that serves proper Slovak mountain food (the bryndzové halušky is worth the trip alone), and they source a lot of ingredients locally. The building also has a traditional sauna, which honestly felt incredible after a day of hiking in the mountains.

With that 9.9 rating, Drevenica Luki is clearly doing something right, and I think it comes down to authenticity. This isn’t trying to be something it’s not — it’s a mountain lodge that happens to be really well-run and genuinely welcoming. The parking is right there (which matters when you’re carrying hiking gear), the location puts you in the heart of some incredible nature, and the hosts treat you like family rather than just another booking.
