Penzion Budzak Overview
First Impressions
Penzion Budzak sits right in the heart of Ždiar, and honestly, you’ll spot it easily enough — it’s one of those traditional Slovak guesthouses that actually looks like it belongs in the mountains. The whole place has this authentic feel that you don’t get with chain hotels, and I mean that in the best way possible. It’s a three-star property, but don’t let that fool you into thinking it’s basic.
Location and the Village
Ždiar itself is this small village tucked right up against the Polish border, and you’re basically surrounded by the High Tatras on all sides. What I love about staying here is that you’re not dealing with the crowds of Zakopane just across the border, but you still get those incredible mountain views. The penzion is walking distance from pretty much everything in the village — which, granted, isn’t a whole lot, but that’s sort of the point.
The Accommodations
My room was surprisingly spacious for a mountain guesthouse, with those thick wooden beams you’d expect and windows that frame the Belianske Tatras perfectly. The beds are proper comfortable, and there’s enough storage space that you won’t be living out of your suitcase. What really impressed me was how clean everything was — I mean, spotless in a way that tells you the owners actually care about this place.
Dining and Atmosphere
The restaurant downstairs serves traditional Slovak food that’s honestly better than what you’ll find in Bratislava’s tourist spots. They do this incredible goulash, and the portions are generous without being ridiculous. Breakfast isn’t fancy, but it’s hearty and fresh — perfect before heading out for a day of hiking. The whole dining area has this cozy, family-run feel where other guests actually talk to each other.
Why Guests Love It
You know what sets Penzion Budzak apart? It’s that 9.8 rating, which honestly doesn’t surprise me at all. The owners — they’re locals who know the area inside and out, and they’ll give you hiking recommendations that aren’t in any guidebook. There’s parking right outside, which is actually a big deal when you’re hauling ski gear or hiking equipment. The whole experience feels authentic rather than manufactured, and in a region where tourism can feel pretty commercialized, that matters. It’s the kind of place where you’ll sleep well, eat well, and wake up excited about exploring the mountains.

What could be improved: Nothing, it was excellent!
Clean, very comfortable rooms with nice interior design. Friendly staff and excellent breakfast. No actual shower, but a bathtub instead.
The hotel is very centrally located. The hosts are exceptionally helpful and went out of their way to make us comfortable. They even helped lift our very heavy bags to our second floor room, which is something usually owners would frown upon. I would...
