First Impressions

Zruby Pod Chopkom sits right in the heart of the Tatras, and honestly, the moment you pull up to this four-star property, you know you’re somewhere special. The traditional Slovak wooden architecture feels authentic — not like some tourist recreation — and the mountain backdrop is just ridiculous (in the best way). I mean, you’re literally at the base of Chopok, one of Slovakia’s most iconic peaks, so the views start immediately.

Location & Mountain Access

What really sold me on this place is how perfectly positioned it is in Tale. You’re maybe a five-minute walk to the Chopok cable car, which is huge if you’re here for skiing or hiking. The village itself is small but has that genuine mountain town feel — no touristy nonsense, just locals going about their business. During summer, you can literally step out the door and start hiking trails that most people drive an hour to reach from other hotels.

The Rooms

My room had this perfect balance of rustic charm and modern comfort that’s actually hard to pull off. The wood-paneled walls and traditional Slovak textiles gave it character, but the bathroom was completely updated and the Wi-Fi worked perfectly (which, let’s be honest, matters even in the mountains). The balcony — well, if you get a south-facing room, you’ll spend way too much time just staring at Chopok. I did, anyway.

The on-site restaurant surprised me with how good the food was. They do traditional Slovak dishes but elevated a bit — think goulash that doesn’t feel heavy, and their take on bryndzové halušky (potato dumplings with sheep cheese) is honestly better than what I had in Bratislava. The dining area has these huge windows facing the mountains, and during dinner, you can watch the last light hit the peaks. There’s also this cozy common area with a fireplace that becomes the social hub in the evenings.
