First Impressions

When I first pulled up to Villa Bergzicht, honestly, I wasn’t sure what to expect from this tucked-away spot in Vulcan. But the moment you see this four-star property nestled against the hillside on Strada Valea Morii, you get it — the name literally means “mountain view” in Dutch, and they weren’t kidding around. The villa has this unexpectedly elegant feel that manages to be both refined and welcoming at the same time.

The Setting

What struck me most was how they’ve positioned this place — you’re technically in Vulcan, but it feels like you’re in your own private retreat. The surrounding area is all rolling hills and forest, which means you get that proper mountain air without being completely cut off from civilization. You know what’s nice? The fact that you can actually hear birds in the morning instead of traffic, which is sort of rare these days.

The Room Experience

My room had these massive windows that basically frame the valley like a living painting — I mean, I found myself just standing there with my coffee more than once. The furnishings feel thoughtfully chosen rather than bulk-ordered, if that makes sense. Everything works properly (the WiFi, the shower pressure, the heating), but more importantly, everything feels intentional and well-maintained.

Dining and Amenities

The restaurant here deserves a mention because they’re clearly working with local suppliers — the ingredients taste like they actually come from somewhere specific rather than a generic distributor. I had this lamb dish that was probably the best I’ve had in Romania, and I’ve been around this country quite a bit. There’s also a spa area that’s compact but well-designed, perfect for unwinding after a day of exploring the Retezat Mountains nearby.

Why Guests Love It

Here’s what I think makes Villa Bergzicht work so well — it’s got that perfect rating of 10 because they’ve figured out how to deliver on the promises they make. You come here for peace and mountain views, and that’s exactly what you get, but with better food and more comfortable beds than you probably expected. The staff clearly takes pride in the place, which shows in all the small details that could easily be overlooked but aren’t.
