SOVA Hotel&Restaurant sits right in the heart of Ždiar, and honestly, it’s one of those places that just feels right the moment you walk in. This three-star spot has that comfortable, unpretentious vibe that’s perfect after a long day exploring the High Tatras. The building itself blends traditional Slovak mountain architecture with modern touches — nothing fancy, but everything’s done thoughtfully.

The Mountain Village Setting

You know what I love about staying here? Ždiar is this authentic mountain village that hasn’t been completely overrun by tourism yet. SOVA sits perfectly positioned where you can walk to the village center in about three minutes, but you’re also right at the gateway to Belianske Tatry. I mean, you can literally see the hiking trails from the hotel. The morning views toward Bachledova Valley are something else — especially when the mist rolls through the peaks.

The Room Experience

The room I stayed in was clean and comfortable, with that mountain lodge feel but without being kitschy about it. The beds are actually quite good — firm but not hard, and the linens feel fresh. What really impressed me was the attention to detail: proper blackout curtains (trust me, you’ll appreciate this during summer), decent WiFi that actually works, and windows that open wide for that crisp mountain air. The bathrooms are compact but well-designed, with strong water pressure that feels great after hiking.

Now, the restaurant downstairs — this is where SOVA really shines. They serve traditional Slovak dishes alongside some international options, but honestly, stick with the local stuff. Their bryndzové halušky is probably the best I’ve had in the region, and the portions are generous without being overwhelming. The staff actually knows the menu inside and out, which isn’t always a given in mountain hotels. Breakfast is simple but solid: fresh bread, local cheeses, and decent coffee.

Here’s the thing about SOVA — it’s not trying to be something it’s not. It’s a well-run, comfortable base for exploring this incredible part of Slovakia.
