First Impressions

When I first pulled up to Sofia Lake House on that winding country road, I honestly wasn’t sure what to expect. The on-site restaurant focuses heavily on regional specialties, and I mean really regional — they source fish directly from the lake and work with nearby farms for most ingredients. I had this incredible trout preparation that the chef described as his grandmother’s recipe, paired with polenta that was creamy perfection. The wine list features some excellent Romanian selections you’d never find in tourist areas, and the staff genuinely knows their stuff when it comes to pairings.

Sofia Lake House delivers something increasingly rare — a genuine escape that doesn’t feel manufactured. There’s no spa with fancy treatments or overcrowded pool area, just you, the lake, and this sense of being completely disconnected from everything stressful. I spent hours just sitting by the water, reading and occasionally taking the complimentary kayak out for a paddle. The parking situation is straightforward (always a relief in rural areas), and the hosts strike that perfect balance between being helpful and giving you space to unwind.
