First Impressions

Penzión u Kastelána sits right in the shadow of one of Europe’s largest castle complexes, and I mean literally — you can almost touch the medieval walls from some windows. This three-star guesthouse feels more like staying at a friend’s place who happens to live next to a UNESCO World Heritage site. Location-wise, you’re in Spišské Podhradie, which translates to “below the castle” — and that’s exactly where you are. The walk to the castle entrance takes about five minutes, maybe less if you’re eager. What I love about this spot is that you’re staying where locals actually live, not in some touristy bubble. There’s a small grocery store nearby, and the village center has that authentic Slovak feel where old ladies still chat on benches and kids play football in the streets.

Your Room

The room I stayed in was clean and comfortable — nothing fancy, but everything worked perfectly. You get solid wooden furniture, decent Wi-Fi (which matters when you’re uploading those castle photos), and really good blackout curtains. The bathroom was compact but well-designed, with a proper shower that actually had good water pressure. Some rooms face the castle directly, others look toward the village, but either way, you’re waking up to pretty spectacular views.

Practical Stuff

There’s free parking right on-site, which is honestly a blessing — trust me, you don’t want to be hunting for parking spots while dragging luggage around these narrow village streets. The owners speak decent English and are genuinely helpful with recommendations. They’ll tell you the best time to visit the castle (early morning, before the tour buses arrive) and which local restaurant serves the best bryndzové halušky — Slovakia’s national dish that you absolutely must try.
