When I first pulled up to Pensiunea Negoiu, I’ll be honest — I wasn’t expecting much from a four-star guesthouse tucked away in the mountains. But there’s something immediately welcoming about this place that catches you off guard. The traditional Romanian architecture feels authentic without being touristy, and you can tell the owners actually care about the details. It’s the kind of spot where someone greets you by name within five minutes of arrival.

The location in Porumbacu de Sus is honestly perfect if you’re planning to explore the Fagaras Mountains. I mean, you’re literally at the base of some of Romania’s most spectacular hiking trails, and the views from the property are incredible — especially in the morning when the mist rolls off the peaks. What surprised me is how quiet it gets at night, which is exactly what you want after a day of mountain adventures. The village itself is small but authentic, with a few local spots worth checking out.

The Room Experience

My room was much more spacious than I expected, with traditional wooden furniture that actually felt comfortable rather than just decorative. The beds are properly firm (thank goodness), and the linens smell like they’ve been air-dried — you know that fresh mountain air smell. What really impressed me was the attention to cleanliness and the little touches like locally-made soaps and a small balcony where you can sit with your morning coffee and just… breathe.

Food & Local Flavors

The restaurant here serves some of the best traditional Romanian food I’ve had outside of someone’s grandmother’s kitchen. The portions are generous — actually generous, not restaurant generous — and they source a lot of ingredients locally. I particularly loved their ciorbă de burtă and the grilled trout, which I’m pretty sure came from nearby streams. Breakfast is hearty and keeps you fueled for mountain activities, with fresh bread and local honey that’ll spoil you for the store-bought stuff back home.

The staff treats you like family (in the best way possible), the parking is secure and right on-site, and there’s this perfect balance of comfort and adventure.
