First Impressions

When I first pulled up to Oczko Na Giewont in Kościelisko, I’ll admit I was a bit skeptical — the name translates roughly to “Eye on Giewont” (referring to the famous Tatra peak), and sometimes places with poetic names don’t live up to the romance. This four-star property proved me completely wrong. The building has this understated mountain lodge feel that actually works, and you can see why they chose the name — Giewont’s distinctive silhouette dominates the horizon from almost every angle.

Location & Mountain Access

Honestly, the location on Strzelców Podhalańskich street is pretty clever. You’re technically in Kościelisko, which means you avoid the tourist chaos of central Zakopane, but it’s still just a quick drive to the main action. What I really appreciated was how close you are to the Kasprowy Wierch cable car — it’s maybe 10 minutes by car, which is gold if you’re planning serious hiking or skiing. The local bus connections aren’t bad either, though having a car definitely makes life easier around here.

The Room Experience

My room faced the mountains (obviously), and the view genuinely made me pause each morning with my coffee. The decor walks that fine line between traditional highland touches and modern comfort — wooden accents without feeling like you’re sleeping in a folk museum. The bathroom was surprisingly spacious for a mountain hotel, and the beds are actually comfortable, not just acceptable. You know what impressed me most? The soundproofing — even with other guests coming and going, the nights stayed quiet.

Food & Atmosphere

The breakfast situation is solid — not spectacular, but definitely above average for this part of Poland. Local cheeses, decent coffee, and they actually make fresh scrambled eggs instead of the usual buffet horror. There’s a small restaurant on-site that serves regional dishes, and while I only ate there once, the oscypek (smoked cheese) appetizer was genuinely good. The staff seemed to actually know the area well — they gave me hiking recommendations that weren’t just the obvious touristy ones.

Why Guests Love It

What sets this place apart is the balance it strikes. You get legitimate mountain views and that peaceful Tatra atmosphere without paying Zakopane’s inflated prices or dealing with its summer crowds. The parking is free and adequate, which might sound boring but trust me, it matters when you’re hauling ski gear or hiking boots. It’s the kind of place where you actually want to spend time on the terrace in the evening, watching the light change on the peaks. For a four-star mountain hotel, it delivers exactly what it promises — no more, but definitely no less.
