First Impressions

When I first pulled up to Nivalis Resort and Spa in the Apuseni Mountains, I honestly wasn’t prepared for how dramatically the landscape would shift from regular Romanian countryside to this almost Alpine setting. Băişorii is one of those destinations that locals from Cluj-Napoca have been quietly enjoying for years — it’s their little secret for weekend getaways. The resort sits right in the heart of what’s basically Romania’s answer to a ski village, complete with slopes that actually get decent snow from December through March. But honestly, I think it’s even better in late spring and summer when the hiking trails open up and you can really explore the surrounding peaks without freezing your toes off.

My room had this perfect balance of mountain lodge charm and modern comfort that you don’t always find in Romanian mountain resorts. The beds are seriously comfortable — I’m talking about the kind where you wake up actually rested instead of with a crick in your neck. What I really appreciated was the heated bathroom floors (trust me, this matters when you’re at altitude in October) and the way the windows frame the forest views without making you feel like you’re living in a fishbowl.

The spa is where this place really shows its worth. The indoor pool feels almost cave-like with its stone surroundings, and the water temperature is perfect year-round. I spent way too much time in their sauna, especially after hiking the Vf. Băişorii trail — your legs will thank you. The restaurant surprised me with how well they handle both traditional Romanian mountain food and lighter international options. Their ciorbă de burtă is actually legit, and they source a lot of ingredients locally, which you can taste.

You’re genuinely in the mountains — I saw deer from my window twice — but you’re not roughing it.
