Mountain Resort Ždiar – River sits right where you’d want it to — tucked into the foothills with the High Tatras looming behind and a gentle river running alongside the property. When I first pulled up, honestly, the setting just stopped me in my tracks. This four-star place doesn’t try to compete with the mountains for attention, which I actually respect.

Location & Getting Around

You know what’s great about Ždiar? It’s this tiny Slovak village that most people drive right through on their way to the bigger resorts, but they’re missing something good. The resort is literally a five-minute walk from the village center (though “center” is generous — it’s more like a cluster of traditional wooden houses and a few local spots). The Polish border is so close you could bike there, and if you’re into hiking, well — the trailheads start practically from your doorstep.

The Accommodations

My room had this perfect mountain lodge feel without being too rustic, if that makes sense. The furniture was solid wood, locally made from what I could tell, and the windows framed the surrounding peaks like living artwork. The bathroom was modern enough, though nothing fancy — but honestly, when you’re looking out at views like these, you’re not spending much time indoors anyway.

The restaurant surprised me — I mean, you don’t expect sophisticated cooking in a village this small, but they’ve got this chef who clearly knows Slovak mountain cuisine inside and out. Try the lamb if they have it; it’s sourced from farms just down the valley. There’s also a small spa area that’s perfect after a day of hiking, though it’s intimate rather than elaborate. The parking situation is straightforward — just a gravel lot, but there’s always space.
