First Impressions

When I first spotted Lac Colibita tucked along the shores of Lake Colibița, I honestly wasn’t expecting much from this mountain retreat. But stepping onto the property — with the four-star hotel’s timber-framed exterior blending seamlessly into the forested hillside — I knew this wasn’t your typical Romanian getaway. The staff greeted me like I was visiting relatives, which set the tone for everything that followed.

Most hotels just slap up a building and call it scenic, but Lac Colibita actually feels like it belongs here in Colibiţa. The walking trails start right from the hotel grounds, and I mean literally — you can be hiking through pristine forest within minutes of leaving your room. During my stay in late summer, the morning mist rolling off the water was something you’d see on a postcard, except this was real life happening right outside my window.

My room was one of those pleasant surprises where everything just works. Sure, it’s not flashy, but the wooden furnishings felt authentic rather than trying too hard to be rustic. I had some of the best trout I’ve tasted in Romania, and the traditional soups were exactly what you want after a day outdoors. The dining room overlooks the water, naturally, and there’s this relaxed vibe where guests actually talk to each other — you don’t get that everywhere. Parking is right there when you need it, which matters when you’re hauling hiking gear or just don’t want to walk far after a big meal.

Look, Lac Colibita isn’t trying to be the fanciest place in the Carpathians, and that’s exactly why it works. The 9.6 rating makes sense when you experience how they’ve nailed the basics while giving you something genuinely special — that connection to the natural setting that so many hotels promise but few deliver.
