The property sits right on Strada 22 Decembrie 1989, and you can tell immediately that someone put real thought into creating something special here. There’s this authentic Romanian charm that feels genuine, not touristy — which is honestly refreshing in a country where so many places try too hard.

The Mocanita Connection

Here’s what I didn’t realize until I got there — the hotel’s name references the famous Mocanita steam train that runs through the Vaser Valley, and you’re perfectly positioned to experience it. The narrow-gauge railway is actually one of Romania’s last working steam trains, and staying here puts you right in the heart of Maramureș logging country. You know what’s cool? You can literally hear the train whistle from the hotel, and the staff knows all the best times to catch it running through the valley.

The Room and Comfort

My room had this perfect blend of traditional Maramureș style with modern comfort — wooden beams, local textiles, but thankfully excellent WiFi and a really good shower. The beds are actually comfortable (I mean, you’d be surprised how often that’s not the case), and the heating works well, which matters when you’re up in the mountains. The attention to detail impressed me — like having local honey and homemade jam at breakfast, or the way they incorporate traditional Maramureș woodworking into the furniture.

Vişeu de Sus isn’t exactly a major tourist destination, and that’s part of what makes staying here special. You’re in authentic rural Romania, surrounded by the Carpathian Mountains, with locals who still practice traditional crafts and farming. The hotel gives you easy access to hiking trails, but also to real Romanian mountain culture — I watched someone’s grandmother teaching kids how to weave traditional patterns right across the street. There’s a decent restaurant within walking distance, though honestly, the hotel’s own food was better than I expected.

The owners clearly care about their guests’ experience — they’ll arrange Mocanita tickets, suggest hiking routes, and actually know the area well enough to give you insider tips about the best photo spots or when the local market happens. Plus, the value is excellent for what you get — I’ve stayed in four-star places in Bucharest that cost twice as much and offered half the character.
