Hotel Maya Overview
First Impressions
When I first pulled up to Hotel Maya on Strada Merilor, I’ll be honest — I wasn’t expecting much from this four-star property tucked away in Horezu. But you know what? Sometimes the best discoveries happen when you least expect them. The building has this understated charm that grows on you, and there’s something refreshing about a place that doesn’t try too hard to impress from the get-go.
Location & Local Flavor
Horezu isn’t exactly a household name, but that’s actually part of its appeal. This little corner of Vâlcea County is famous for its traditional pottery — UNESCO even recognized the local ceramic craft. The hotel sits right in the heart of things, which means you’re walking distance from the pottery workshops and the stunning Hurezi Monastery. I mean, how often do you get to stay somewhere where you can watch artisans work with techniques that haven’t changed in centuries?
The Room Experience
My room was larger than I expected, with those high ceilings that older buildings in Romania tend to have. The decor strikes a nice balance — modern enough that everything works properly, but with touches that nod to the local culture. The bed was genuinely comfortable (not just hotel-marketing comfortable), and the bathroom had decent water pressure, which honestly can be hit-or-miss in smaller Romanian towns.
Dining & Atmosphere
The restaurant downstairs serves solid Romanian fare with some regional specialties I hadn’t tried before. Their ciorbă de burtă is actually pretty decent — and I’m picky about that dish. What I really appreciated was how the staff seemed to know the area inside and out. They pointed me toward a local ceramic workshop that wasn’t overrun with tourists, and their dinner recommendations were spot-on.
Why Guests Love It
Here’s the thing about Hotel Maya — it’s not trying to be something it’s not. You’re not getting marble lobbies or a spa, but you are getting genuine hospitality in a place that feels authentically Romanian. The parking situation is straightforward (always a relief), and the 8.6 rating makes sense once you’ve been there. It’s the kind of place where you end up having longer conversations with locals than you planned, and somehow that becomes the highlight of your trip.

Potentiel to be really good when the drive and pool are finished.
Great AC and comfortable beds
What could be improved: Emergency lights located directly above the bed on ceiling was annoying. Putting smoke alarms by the door would solve this problem
