When I first pulled up to Chata u Jany domček in Ždiar, I honestly wasn’t sure what to expect from this three-star mountain retreat. The traditional Slovak architecture immediately caught my eye — you know, those classic wooden chalets that look like they’ve been plucked from a fairytale. What surprised me most was how perfectly maintained everything looked, from the hand-carved details on the exterior to the immaculate gardens surrounding the property.

Ždiar sits in this incredible valley between the High Tatras and Belianske Tatras, and I mean, the views from here are just ridiculous. The village itself feels authentic — not touristy in that manufactured way, but genuinely Slovak with locals who still wave when you walk by. You’re actually positioned perfectly for hiking the Tatras, and the Belianska Cave system is maybe a 15-minute drive if you’re into that sort of underground adventure.

The Room Experience

My room had this cozy alpine feel with wooden beams and traditional textiles that somehow managed to feel rustic without being uncomfortable. The beds are surprisingly good quality — I slept better here than I have in some much pricier places, honestly. There’s a small kitchenette if you want to prepare simple meals, which comes in handy when you’re planning early morning hikes and don’t want to rely on restaurant schedules.

Daily Life & Atmosphere

Mornings here start quietly — well, except for the church bells from the village center, but they’re charming rather than annoying. The breakfast spread isn’t elaborate, but it’s hearty Slovak fare that’ll fuel you for whatever mountain adventure you’ve planned. I found myself spending evenings on the terrace just watching the light change on the peaks, which sounds cheesy but actually becomes this daily ritual you look forward to.
