Tucked away in Ústie nad Priehradou, this four-star mountain retreat feels like discovering a well-kept secret. The building itself has that appealing Slovak mountain lodge aesthetic — not flashy, but perfectly suited to its surroundings with wooden accents and clean lines that complement rather than compete with the landscape.

Location & Setting

What struck me most was how the location works on multiple levels. You’re literally steps from Orava Dam, which creates this stunning artificial lake that honestly looks better than many natural ones I’ve seen. The views toward Starohorské vrchy (the Old Mountain range) are the kind that make you stop mid-conversation. It’s about 15 minutes from Trstená proper, so you get the mountain solitude without being completely cut off from civilization — there’s a decent grocery store and some local spots for traditional Slovak food nearby.

The Accommodation

My room had this perfect balance of mountain coziness and modern comfort that’s surprisingly hard to find. The furnishings were thoughtfully chosen — solid wood pieces that felt substantial, not the typical hotel particleboard stuff. What I appreciated was the attention to details like blackout curtains (crucial when you want to sleep in after a day of hiking) and a bathroom that actually had decent water pressure. The beds are genuinely comfortable, and you know what? The pillows were just right — not too firm, not too soft.

The on-site restaurant serves exactly what you’d hope for in this setting — hearty Slovak mountain food done well. I had their goulash, and it was the real deal, not some tourist version. The portions are generous (as they should be), and they source ingredients locally when possible. The spa facilities are modest but well-maintained, which honestly fits the vibe better than some over-the-top wellness center would.

The staff clearly takes pride in what they’re doing — they know the hiking trails, can recommend the best fishing spots on the reservoir, and will point you toward the less crowded viewpoints.
