When I first pulled up to Chata pod hradom 2 in Uhrovské Podhradie, I honestly wasn’t sure what to expect. This unique boutique hotel sits right beneath the ruins of Uhrovec Castle — and I mean right beneath it. You can literally see the medieval stones looming above from the property. It’s one of those places that feels completely removed from the usual hotel experience, more like staying at someone’s incredibly thoughtful countryside retreat.

The Setting

The location is pretty extraordinary, actually. Uhrovské Podhradie isn’t exactly a tourist hotspot, which is part of its charm. This tiny Slovak village sits in rolling hills about an hour from Trenčín, and the castle ruins above the hotel date back to the 13th century. What struck me most was the complete quiet — no traffic, no city noise, just the sound of wind through the trees. The parking area is right on the property, which is handy since you’ll definitely need a car to get here.

The Accommodation

My room was surprisingly modern inside what looks like a traditional mountain chalet from the outside. The owners have done this interesting thing where they’ve kept the rustic wooden exterior but made the interiors clean and contemporary. Large windows frame those castle views perfectly, and the beds are genuinely comfortable — not always a given in smaller properties like this. The bathroom was compact but well-designed, with good water pressure (something I always check first).

Dining Experience

The restaurant here focuses on traditional Slovak cuisine, but it’s elevated beyond what you might expect. I had this incredible wild game dish that the owner told me was prepared using recipes from the region. Breakfast featured local cheeses, homemade bread, and honey from nearby beehives. You know what impressed me most? They actually knew where every ingredient came from and were happy to talk about it. It’s that kind of personal attention you just don’t get at chain hotels.

Why Guests Love It

This place gets a perfect 10 rating because it delivers something genuinely different. It’s not trying to be a five-star resort — instead, it’s perfected this cozy, authentic mountain escape experience. The owners clearly live and breathe hospitality, and they’ve created something that feels both historic and comfortable. If you’re looking for a spa or nightlife, this isn’t your place. But if you want to disconnect, explore castle ruins, and experience real Slovak countryside hospitality, I can’t think of anywhere better.
