Casa Roben Overview
First Impressions
Honestly, I wasn’t expecting much when I first pulled up to Casa Roben — it’s tucked away in this tiny village called Suseni, and you’d drive right past it if you weren’t looking for it. But that’s actually part of its charm. This four-star place sits quietly in the Hunedoara countryside, and the moment you step inside, you realize someone put real thought into every detail.
Location & Setting
The thing about staying in Rîu de Mori commune is that you’re properly in rural Romania — I mean, this isn’t some tourist trap pretending to be authentic. You’ve got the Retezat Mountains rising up around you, and honestly, the air feels different here. It’s about 45 minutes from Deva if you need civilization, but most guests I talked to said they barely wanted to leave the property. The village itself is sleepy in the best way, with locals who still wave when you walk by.
The Room Experience
My room had this perfect balance — modern comfort without losing that Romanian countryside feel. The bed was genuinely comfortable (sometimes you worry in smaller places), and the bathroom was spotless with proper water pressure. What I loved most was the attention to local touches — hand-carved wooden details and textiles that felt authentic, not like someone ordered them from a catalog. The windows open to mountain views that honestly make you want to just sit there with your morning coffee.
Dining & Hospitality
The restaurant serves traditional Romanian dishes, and you can tell they’re using local ingredients — the meat tastes like it should, if you know what I mean. The staff actually knows the area well and gave me solid recommendations for hiking trails I never would’ve found otherwise. Breakfast isn’t fancy, but it’s filling and includes local cheeses and homemade bread that’s still warm. The owner, Roben, often stops by tables to chat, which adds that personal touch you don’t get at chain hotels.
Why Guests Keep Coming Back
With a 9.7 rating, Casa Roben clearly does something right, and after staying there, I get it. It’s the kind of place where you actually disconnect — there’s WiFi, but you’ll find yourself using it less. The surrounding area offers serious hiking if you’re into that, plus you’re close enough to explore Hunedoara’s castles and historic sites. But really, most people seem to come here to slow down, and the hotel facilitates that beautifully without being pretentious about it. It’s authentic Romania without the rough edges.
