When I first pulled up to Apple House on Tsarina Street, I’ll be honest — the name had me expecting something a bit more, well, fruity. Instead, what you get is this beautifully restored building that feels like it belongs in the Carpathian foothills, which makes perfect sense since that’s exactly where it sits. The four-star property has this understated elegance that doesn’t try too hard, and honestly, that’s refreshing in a region where some hotels go overboard with the mountain lodge theme.

Here’s what locals know about Mykulychyn — it’s perfectly positioned between the touristy chaos of Yaremche and the more remote mountain villages, so you get the best of both worlds. Apple House sits right in this sweet spot where you can actually walk to decent restaurants and small shops, but you’re still surrounded by those rolling Carpathian hills that make this area so special. The train station is maybe a 10-minute walk if you’re coming from Ivano-Frankivsk, which beats dealing with the sometimes sketchy mountain roads.

My room had this interesting mix of modern amenities and traditional Ukrainian touches — think heated floors (a godsend in winter) paired with hand-carved wooden furniture that actually looks authentic rather than mass-produced. The windows are properly insulated, which matters more than you’d think when those Carpathian winds pick up. What really impressed me was the attention to sound insulation; mountain hotels can be surprisingly noisy, but I slept through what my neighbor later told me was quite a thunderstorm.

The on-site restaurant serves this wonderful fusion of Hutsul cuisine with more contemporary Ukrainian dishes — their borscht is legitimately some of the best I’ve had outside of someone’s grandmother’s kitchen. Breakfast runs until a civilized 10 AM, which I appreciated after some long evening walks through the surrounding forests. You know what’s nice? They don’t rush you out of the dining area, so you can actually sit with your coffee and plan your day without feeling like you’re holding up a table.
