You know what caught me off guard about Apartmán Spišský Hrad? It’s literally sitting in the shadow of one of Europe’s most impressive medieval castles, yet somehow it doesn’t feel touristy at all. This three-star place in the tiny village of Studenec has this wonderfully authentic Slovak feel — like you’re staying at a friend’s place rather than some generic hotel. The 9.2 rating makes perfect sense once you’re there.

Location & Castle Views

Honestly, the location is pretty spectacular. Studenec is this quiet little village that most people just drive through on their way to Spiš Castle, but staying here overnight? That’s when the magic happens. You get these incredible views of the castle ruins, especially at sunset when the whole structure just glows against the sky. The village itself is peaceful — we’re talking about the kind of place where you hear church bells and farm animals, not traffic.

The Apartment Experience

The apartment setup works really well, especially if you’re planning to stay a few days. There’s a proper kitchen with everything you need, which is perfect because the nearest restaurant options are a bit limited (though what’s there is good). The room was clean and comfortable — nothing fancy, but that’s not what you’re here for anyway. I mean, when you’ve got a medieval castle practically in your backyard, who cares about thread count?

Exploring the Area

Here’s something most visitors don’t realize: you can actually walk to Spiš Castle from the apartment in about 20 minutes. The path winds through some lovely countryside, and you’ll often have the castle almost to yourself if you go early morning or late afternoon. There’s decent parking if you’re driving, and the hosts are genuinely helpful with local recommendations — they pointed us toward this great traditional Slovak restaurant in nearby Žehra that we never would have found otherwise.

Look, this isn’t the kind of place with a spa or room service — it’s better than that. You’re getting an authentic slice of rural Slovakia with one of the country’s most important historical sites right there. The value is exceptional, the hosts actually care about your experience, and you’ll have stories that your friends who stayed in generic city hotels definitely won’t. Plus, waking up to views of a UNESCO World Heritage castle? That’s pretty hard to beat.
