Apartmán Braxatoris sits right on Akademická street in the heart of Banská Štiavnica’s UNESCO-listed old town, and honestly, the location alone makes this place worth considering. When I first walked up to the building, I wasn’t expecting much from the exterior — it’s pretty understated — but once you step inside, you realize this three-star apartment has everything you actually need for exploring Slovakia’s most charming mining town.

The Space

The room itself feels more like staying at a friend’s well-appointed flat than a typical hotel. There’s a proper kitchenette with everything you need to make coffee in the morning or heat up some of those amazing Slovak pastries from the bakery down the street. I mean, having that flexibility when you’re traveling — especially if you want to grab supplies from the local market — makes such a difference.

Location & Getting Around

You know what’s great about this spot? You’re literally a two-minute walk from the main square with all those colorful burgher houses, and the famous Holy Trinity Column is right there. The old castle ruins are maybe a ten-minute climb uphill, which sounds worse than it actually is. There’s parking available too, which honestly surprised me since most places in the historic center make you hunt for a spot blocks away.

Local Experience

What I really appreciated was how the owners clearly know their neighborhood — they left recommendations for the best local spots that you’d never find in a guidebook. The little restaurant they suggested around the corner serves incredible goulash, and it’s where the locals actually eat. During mining festival season, you’re right in the middle of all the action, but even on quiet weekdays, there’s something magical about wandering these medieval streets early in the morning before the tour groups arrive.
