First Impressions

Honestly, I wasn’t expecting much when I first pulled up to Vama Chalet in the small village of Vama Buzăului — but wow, was I wrong. This four-star gem sits right at the edge of the Carpathian foothills, and the moment you step out of your car, you’re hit with that crisp mountain air that makes you want to take the deepest breath of your life. The chalet itself has this perfect blend of traditional Romanian mountain architecture with modern touches that don’t feel forced or overdone.

The Mountain Village Setting

What I love about staying here is that you’re actually in a real Romanian village, not some touristy bubble. Vama Buzăului is one of those places where locals still wave at you from their gardens, and honestly, it’s refreshing. The chalet is positioned so you get incredible views of the surrounding peaks — I mean, you wake up and there’s literally a postcard outside your window. It’s about a 20-minute drive to reach the main hiking trails in Postăvaru Massif, which locals will tell you are way less crowded than the ones near Brașov.

The Accommodation

My room was spacious and had this cozy mountain lodge feel without being kitschy about it. The wooden beams and stone accents feel authentic, probably because they are — you can tell this isn’t some chain hotel trying to fake Romanian charm. The beds are seriously comfortable (important after a day of hiking), and each room has a small seating area where you can actually relax with a book. The bathrooms are modern and well-appointed, with those little touches that show someone actually thought about what guests need.

Dining and Amenities

The on-site restaurant serves traditional Romanian mountain cuisine, and I have to say, their ciorbă de burtă is probably the best I’ve had outside of Bucharest. The portions are generous — mountain-sized, you could say — and they source a lot of ingredients locally. There’s also a small spa area where you can unwind after exploring the trails, which is exactly what you want after scrambling around the Carpathians all day. They’ve got parking right on-site too, which might not sound exciting but trust me, it matters when you’re dealing with narrow village roads.

Why Guests Love It

What really sets Vama Chalet apart is that perfect 10 rating — and after staying here, I get it. It’s not trying to be something it’s not; it’s just a really well-run mountain retreat that understands what travelers actually want. The staff knows the area inside and out (ask them about the hidden waterfall trail), the food is genuinely good, and the whole place has this relaxed vibe that makes you want to extend your stay. You’re close enough to explore the region but far enough from crowds to actually hear the silence of the mountains at night.
