Honestly, I wasn’t sure what to expect when I first pulled up to MonteCrai in the tiny village of Şirnea. The drive itself is half the experience — you’re winding through the Carpathian Mountains on roads that feel like they were carved just for you. When the property finally comes into view, it’s this perfect blend of traditional Romanian mountain architecture with clean, modern lines that somehow doesn’t feel forced.

Şirnea isn’t just remote — it’s properly isolated in the best possible way. We’re talking about a village where you can actually hear silence, which sounds cheesy but honestly hits different after months of city noise. The hotel sits at about 1,000 meters elevation in Brașov County, and you know what? The air genuinely feels cleaner up here. I mean, you’re surrounded by the Piatra Craiului National Park, so you’re basically sleeping inside a nature reserve.

The Accommodations

My room had this massive window that framed the mountains like a living painting — sounds dramatic, but I’m not exaggerating. The design walks this interesting line between rustic mountain cabin and boutique hotel, with local wood everywhere but nothing that feels heavy or overdone. The beds are seriously comfortable, which matters when you’ve been hiking all day, and the heating actually works (not always a given in mountain hotels, trust me).

Food and Dining

The restaurant focuses on local ingredients in a way that doesn’t feel like they’re trying too hard to be trendy. I had some of the best ciorbă de burtă I’ve tasted outside of Bucharest, and their take on mici uses meat from farms you can literally see from the dining room windows. Breakfast runs until a reasonable hour, which I appreciated since mountain air makes you sleep like the dead. They also stock local țuică if you’re feeling adventurous — just pace yourself.

Why Guests Love It

Look, this four-star place isn’t trying to be everything to everyone, and that’s exactly why it works so well. You come here to disconnect properly — there’s WiFi, but it’s not amazing, which honestly becomes a feature rather than a bug. The 9.4 rating makes sense when you realize they’ve nailed the fundamentals: comfortable beds, great food, genuine hospitality, and a location that delivers on the whole “escape from everything” promise. It’s the kind of place where you actually use the hiking trails they recommend, then come back and sleep better than you have in months.
