First Impressions

Honestly, when I first pulled up to Căsuța de munte, I wasn’t quite sure what to expect from this mountain retreat tucked away in the Romanian countryside. The name literally means “little mountain house,” and that’s exactly what it feels like — except this particular little house happens to be a four-star gem that punches way above its weight. You know what struck me immediately? The complete silence, broken only by the sound of wind through the trees.

Location & Setting

This place sits in Mărișel, which is basically the middle of nowhere in the best possible way. I mean, you’re about an hour from Cluj-Napoca, but it feels like you’ve stepped into a different world entirely. The Apuseni Mountains stretch out in every direction, and during my stay, I spent way too much time just staring out at the rolling hills. The air up here is so clean it actually makes your lungs feel spoiled for going back to city life.

The Accommodation

My room was surprisingly spacious for what I’d expected from a mountain lodge. The wooden beams and traditional Romanian touches give it character without feeling overdone — you know how some places try too hard to be “rustic”? Not here. The bed was comfortable enough that I actually overslept two mornings in a row, which never happens to me. What really got me was the view from the window; I’d wake up to fog rolling across the mountains like something out of a fairy tale.

Food & Dining

The restaurant here serves up proper Romanian mountain food — hearty, warming stuff that makes sense when you’re surrounded by all this fresh air. I had some of the best ciorbă de burtă I’ve ever tasted, and their local trout was perfectly done. The dining room has these big windows that frame the landscape, so even meal times become part of the scenery. They source a lot of ingredients locally, which you can actually taste in the freshness of everything.

Why Guests Love It

Look, with a 9.1 rating, this place is clearly doing something right, and after staying here, I get it completely. It’s that rare spot where you can truly disconnect without feeling like you’re roughing it. The staff treats you like family — not in an intrusive way, but with genuine warmth that makes you want to come back. There’s decent parking right on-site, which matters when you’re hauling luggage up mountain roads. What really sells it though is the balance — comfortable enough for couples looking for romance, peaceful enough for solo travelers needing to recharge, and authentic enough that you feel like you’re experiencing real Romanian mountain hospitality rather than some sanitized tourist version.
