When I first pulled up to TheRefuge in Bucșenești, I honestly wasn’t sure what to expect from this remote corner of Romania. The name pretty much says it all though — this four-star property really does feel like you’ve found your own personal hideaway in the Carpathian foothills. You’re about 20 minutes from Curtea de Argeș proper, but that distance actually works in your favor here.

The Setting

What struck me most was how they’ve managed to create this bubble of calm without feeling completely cut off from civilization. The surrounding countryside is gorgeous — rolling hills, traditional Romanian villages, and enough fresh air to make you forget about city life for a while. I mean, you can still get decent cell service (which matters more than I’d like to admit), but you’re far enough out that the only sounds at night are crickets and maybe the occasional sheep bell.

My room was surprisingly spacious, with these huge windows that frame the landscape perfectly. The design hits that sweet spot between rustic charm and modern comfort — think exposed wooden beams but with a rainfall shower that actually has proper water pressure. The beds are seriously comfortable too, which you don’t always get at mountain properties. What I really appreciated was that they source a lot of ingredients locally — you can actually taste the difference in the vegetables and dairy. The staff has this relaxed, genuinely friendly vibe that feels authentic rather than rehearsed, which can be rare at hotels trying too hard to impress.
