Stara Chata Overview
First Impressions
Stara Chata sits tucked away on a quiet street in Zakopane, and honestly, you might drive past it if you’re not paying attention. The name means “old cottage” in Polish, which gives you a pretty good idea of what you’re getting into — this four-star place has that authentic mountain lodge feel without trying too hard. The wooden facade and traditional highland architecture immediately tell you this isn’t some cookie-cutter hotel chain.
Location & Getting Around
Chramcówki street is actually one of those residential areas where locals live, not just tourists passing through. You’re about a 10-minute walk from Krupówki (that’s the main pedestrian strip where everyone ends up), but far enough away that you won’t hear drunk tourists singing at 2 AM. The Tatra mountains are right there — I mean, you can see them from most windows, and the cable car to Kasprowy Wierch is maybe 15 minutes if you’re walking at a decent pace.
The Room Experience
My room had this perfect balance of mountain rustic and modern comfort. The wooden beams weren’t just for show — they’re actually part of the structure, which I appreciate. What really won me over was the heated bathroom floors (trust me, this matters when it’s -10°C outside) and the fact that the Wi-Fi actually worked well enough for video calls. The beds are proper firm, not that squishy hotel nonsense, and the mountain views from the upper floors are genuinely spectacular.
Dining & Atmosphere
The restaurant downstairs serves traditional Polish mountain food, but they’ve elevated it beyond the usual tourist trap level. Their oscypek (that’s the local smoked sheep cheese) comes with cranberry sauce that’s actually homemade, and the zurek soup is the real deal — not from a packet. Breakfast runs until 10 AM, which is reasonable, and they’ll pack you a hiking lunch if you ask the night before. The dining room gets pretty cozy when it’s full, but that adds to the charm rather than feeling cramped.
Why Guests Love It
Look, Stara Chata isn’t trying to be the fanciest place in Zakopane — it’s trying to be authentic, and it succeeds. The staff actually knows the area well enough to give you hiking recommendations that aren’t just copied from a guidebook. Parking is included (which saves you about 20 złoty per day compared to other places), and the whole vibe feels like staying at a well-run mountain guesthouse rather than a sterile hotel. It’s the kind of place where you can come back muddy from hiking and nobody looks at you funny.

Great place in Zakopane!
Location was excellent, easy to get everywhere, we have been to Zakopane many times but never stayed here before.
What could be improved: I never checked regarding towels, it would have been good to have some kitchen towels.
Great location, spacious, with a well-equipped kitchen and coffee maker. Lovely decor and very comfortable for a large group, with blankets provided for chilly days. The dishwasher and washing machine were especially useful, and the herbs, spices,...
The location and proximity to zakopane town makes this property good What could be improved: Some of the decor is old and dated, The shower curtain in the bathroom upstairs isn’t best suited to the shape of the shower, and we found that water kept...
