You’re staying in Matěk, which is basically a small village outside of Nové Mesto nad Váhom — not exactly a tourist hotspot, but that’s the beauty of it. The countryside here is genuinely peaceful, with rolling hills and farmland stretching in every direction. I mean, if you’re looking for nightlife or shopping, you’ve picked the wrong place, but if you want to actually disconnect and breathe some clean air, this spot delivers.

The Accommodation

My room had that authentic Slovak cottage feel — wooden beams, simple furniture, and windows that actually open (revolutionary concept, right?). The beds are comfortable enough, though don’t expect thread counts to be listed anywhere. There’s a small kitchenette area where you can make coffee or heat up simple meals, which comes in handy since dining options in the immediate area are pretty limited.

Local Flavor

The family running this place — they’re the real deal. They speak limited English, but they’re incredibly welcoming and will go out of their way to help you figure out local hiking trails or point you toward the nearest grocery store. There’s a small restaurant on-site, but it’s more like a dining room where they serve traditional Slovak meals when they feel like it. You know what though? When they do cook, it’s absolutely worth it — proper goulash and dumplings that taste like they’ve been making them for decades.

This isn’t a place you book if you want Instagram-worthy amenities or a concierge desk. You come here because it’s authentic, affordable, and genuinely peaceful. The parking is right outside your door, the hiking trails start basically from the property, and you’ll fall asleep to complete silence — no traffic, no city noise, just the occasional cow in the distance.
