When I first pulled up to Chata Tri kočky in the heart of the Low Tatras, I honestly wasn’t sure what to expect from this unique boutique hotel without official star rating. The name literally means “Three Cats Cottage,” and you know what — it perfectly captures the quirky, intimate vibe of this place. Tucked away in Mýto pod Ďumbierom, this isn’t your typical mountain lodge, and that’s exactly what makes it special.
The Setting
The location is pretty incredible if you’re into hiking or skiing — you’re basically at the foot of Ďumbier, which is the highest peak in the Low Tatras. I mean, the views from here are something else, especially in the morning when the mist rolls off the mountains. The village itself is tiny (think maybe 200 people), so it’s genuinely peaceful — no crowds, no tourist buses, just you and the mountains.
The Experience
What struck me most was how personal everything feels here. Each room has its own character — some have traditional Slovak touches, others lean more modern mountain chic. The owners clearly put thought into every detail, from the local artwork to the way they’ve incorporated natural materials. There’s this cozy common area where guests actually hang out and chat, which you don’t see much anymore at most places.
Food and Atmosphere
The on-site restaurant serves up solid Slovak mountain cuisine — think hearty goulash, local trout, and surprisingly good vegetarian options. Breakfast was simple but fresh, with local honey and homemade bread that actually tasted homemade. The staff knows the area inside and out, so if you’re planning hikes or looking for hidden spots, they’re your best resource.

Honestly, this place works because it doesn’t try to be something it’s not. With that 9.9 rating, guests clearly appreciate the authentic mountain experience without unnecessary frills. The parking is right there (which matters when you’re hauling ski gear), and you’re close enough to larger towns like Banská Bystrica if you need city amenities.
