Casa La Balauri Overview
First Impressions
When I first walked up to Casa La Balauri, I honestly wasn’t expecting much from the quiet residential street. But this four-star boutique hotel surprised me completely — it’s tucked away on Str. Iezer like a well-kept secret that locals don’t want tourists to discover. The building has this charming traditional Romanian architecture that feels authentic without trying too hard, and you can tell someone put real thought into preserving its character.
Location & Getting Around
Here’s what I love about staying here — you’re actually in a real neighborhood in Drobeta-Turnu Severin, not some touristy bubble. The Danube is just a short walk away, and I mean really short, maybe five minutes if you’re taking your time. You can easily reach the Iron Gates area, which honestly is the main reason most people end up in this part of Romania anyway. The hotel staff gave me directions to this little riverside path that most guidebooks don’t mention, and it became my favorite evening walk.
The Room Experience
My room was way more spacious than I expected — these old buildings sometimes surprise you with their generous proportions. The decor strikes this nice balance between traditional Romanian touches and modern comfort, though I’ll be honest, it’s the little details that won me over. Fresh flowers, locally-made soaps, and windows that actually open wide (you know how rare that’s becoming in hotels). The beds are properly firm, which my back appreciated after all that walking around the Iron Gates.
Dining & Daily Rhythms
The breakfast situation here is something special — they serve it in this sun-filled dining area that overlooks a small garden. It’s not a massive buffet spread, but everything they do offer is clearly sourced locally, and the coffee is actually good (which, let’s face it, can be hit-or-miss in smaller Romanian towns). The restaurant operates more like a family kitchen in the evenings, and while the menu isn’t huge, what they make, they make well. I had this incredible ciorbă de burtă that reminded me why I love traveling through Romania.
Why Guests Love It
Look, Casa La Balauri isn’t going to wow you with flashy amenities or a rooftop pool. What it offers is something increasingly rare — genuine hospitality in a place that feels real. The owners clearly live and breathe this business, and that 9.8 rating makes perfect sense once you’ve stayed here. You’re getting authentic Romanian hospitality, a great base for exploring the Danube region, and honestly, some of the best sleep I’ve had in months. If you’re the type of traveler who values character over chain hotel predictability, this place will stick with you long after you’ve moved on to your next destination.
