Walking up to this converted railway depot in Špania Dolina, I honestly wasn’t sure what to expect — but the moment you step inside, you realize someone put serious thought into transforming this industrial space into something genuinely special.

Špania Dolina is one of those Slovak mountain villages that feels almost too picturesque to be real. It’s tucked into the Low Tatras, about 20 minutes from Banská Bystrica, and the village itself is a UNESCO World Heritage site. The hotel sits right in the heart of it all, and I mean that — you can walk to the historic mining museum in about three minutes. There’s parking right at the property, which is actually a big deal because some of these mountain villages make you hike from wherever you can squeeze your car.

The goulash here is probably the best I’ve had in Slovakia, and that’s saying something after years of trying different places across the country.
