First Impressions

When I first pulled up to Stará Škola in the tiny village of Priepasné, I honestly wasn’t sure what to expect. The name means “Old School” in Slovak, and that’s exactly what this unique boutique hotel without official star rating used to be — a converted schoolhouse from the 1900s. What struck me immediately was how they’ve kept the building’s original character while creating something that feels completely fresh and modern.

Location & Village Life

You know what’s amazing about staying here? Priepasné is this sleepy village tucked into the Little Carpathians, about 40 minutes from Bratislava — close enough for a day trip but far enough to feel like you’ve escaped completely. The surrounding hills are perfect for hiking, and I mean proper Slovak countryside hiking where you’ll encounter more sheep than people. The village itself has maybe 300 residents, so don’t expect bustling nightlife, but that’s entirely the point.

The Building & Design

Walking through Stará Škola feels like exploring a carefully curated museum where you actually get to sleep. They’ve preserved original elements like the wooden floors and high ceilings, but each room has been thoughtfully redesigned with contemporary Slovak design touches. I stayed in what used to be a classroom, and honestly, it was surreal in the best way — spacious, bright, with these huge windows that frame the rolling hills perfectly. The communal areas still have that scholarly atmosphere, with bookshelves and vintage school furniture mixed with modern comfort.

Food & Local Experience

The on-site restaurant focuses on traditional Slovak cuisine with ingredients sourced from local farms — and I mean actually local, not just marketing speak. Their bryndzové halušky (potato dumplings with sheep cheese) was some of the best I’ve had anywhere in Slovakia. What I really appreciated was how the staff — most of whom are from the village — genuinely love sharing stories about the area’s history and traditions. They’ll point you toward hidden hiking trails and tell you which local wine producers are worth visiting.

Why Guests Love It

This place works because it’s authentic without trying too hard to be rustic or quaint. The 9.6 rating makes sense when you consider that guests aren’t just getting a bed for the night — they’re experiencing a piece of Slovak rural culture that’s becoming harder to find. It’s perfect if you want to disconnect (Wi-Fi is available but honestly, you won’t want to use it much) and experience Slovakia beyond Bratislava’s tourist trail. Just bring a good book and comfortable walking shoes, and prepare to slow down completely.
