The name “Kolkáreň” actually refers to an old wheelwright’s shop, which makes perfect sense when you see the traditional craftsmanship details throughout. It’s a three-star place, but don’t let that fool you into thinking it’s basic — the owners clearly put thought into every corner.

Being on Námestie svätého Mikuláša means you’re literally in the heart of everything that matters in this small Spiš region town. The square itself is one of those perfectly preserved medieval spaces where you can actually imagine what life was like centuries ago. You’ll have the Gothic church of St. Nicholas right there, and the castle looming on the hill above — I mean, you can see it from some of the windows, which is pretty spectacular first thing in the morning.

The Room Experience

The room I stayed in had exposed wooden beams and this wonderful mix of old-world character with modern comfort. The beds are genuinely comfortable (not always a given in smaller Slovak pensions), and the bathrooms are updated without losing that rustic feel. What I really appreciated was the attention to local details — hand-painted furniture and textiles that actually feel connected to the region rather than generic hotel decor.

Dining & Local Flavors

The restaurant downstairs serves traditional Slovak dishes that go way beyond the usual touristy fare. Their bryndzové halušky is outstanding — creamy sheep cheese dumplings that locals actually eat here, not just something for visitors. The staff knows their wine too, particularly the local varieties from the nearby vineyards that most people don’t even know exist in this part of Slovakia. Breakfast includes fresh local bread and regional cheeses that you won’t find in chain hotels.
