But that’s the point — if you’re looking for hiking trails that lead to actual wilderness, or if you want to explore the nearby Morské oko lake (which locals will tell you is one of Slovakia’s hidden gems), this spot makes perfect sense. The Ukrainian border is just a stone’s throw away, which gives the whole area an interesting cultural mix.

The Accommodation

My room was larger than I expected, with that solid European build quality you don’t see much anymore. The furnishings felt authentically Slovak — not trying too hard to be rustic, just genuinely comfortable. The bathroom was modern without being flashy, and honestly, after a day of mountain hiking, that’s exactly what you want. The heating worked perfectly too, which matters more than you’d think when you’re up in these elevations during cooler months.

Dining Experience

The on-site restaurant turned out to be one of those pleasant surprises. The chef clearly knows the local ingredients — wild mushrooms, game, that sort of thing — and doesn’t overcomplicate them. I had venison that was probably wandering these same hills not too long ago, paired with local beer that actually complemented the meal instead of just washing it down. The portions are generous too, which you’ll appreciate if you’ve been out exploring all day.
