Chata Drevenica catches you off guard in the best possible way. Tucked into the foothills near Habovka, this three-star gem feels like stumbling upon someone’s perfectly maintained mountain retreat. The wooden exterior blends so naturally with the surrounding landscape that you almost drive past it — which honestly makes arriving feel like discovering a secret.

The Setting

Pod grúňom translates roughly to “under the hill,” and that’s exactly where you’ll find yourself. The Orava region doesn’t get nearly the attention it deserves, but locals know it’s one of Slovakia’s most authentic mountain experiences. You’re close enough to Oravský Podzámok castle (about 15 minutes by car) to make it a proper day trip, but far enough from crowds to actually hear the forest around you. I mean, the silence here at night is almost startling if you’re used to city life.

The Room Experience

The room I stayed in had that perfect balance of rustic charm and modern comfort — thick wooden beams overhead, but reliable WiFi and a spotless bathroom. What really struck me was the attention to detail: proper blackout curtains (rare in mountain lodges), a small seating area by the window, and heating that actually works efficiently. The beds are firm in that European way that somehow leaves you more rested than expected.

The on-site restaurant serves what I’d call elevated Slovak comfort food. Their bryndzové halušky (potato dumplings with sheep cheese) is outstanding, but they also do surprisingly good trout — likely from local streams. Breakfast isn’t fancy, but it’s substantial: fresh bread, local cheeses, and coffee that’s actually strong enough to wake you up for mountain hikes. The staff seems to genuinely know the area, which makes a difference when you’re asking about trail conditions or weather patterns.

This isn’t a place trying to be something it’s not — it’s a well-run mountain lodge that happens to excel at the basics. The owners clearly live nearby (you’ll often see them around the property), and there’s reliable parking right outside, which matters more than you’d think when you’re hauling hiking gear.
