When I first pulled up to Chata Katrina in Liptovský Trnovec, I’ll be honest — I wasn’t expecting much from what looked like a simple mountain chalet. But you know what? Sometimes the best places are the ones that surprise you. This three-star property sits quietly in one of Slovakia’s most underrated corners, and with a 9.6 rating, there’s clearly something special happening here that most travelers are missing.

Location & Setting

The thing about Liptovský Trnovec is that it’s perfectly positioned between the High Tatras and Low Tatras — you’re basically in hiking heaven without the crowds you’d find in Zakopane or other touristy mountain towns. What I loved is how Chata Katrina takes advantage of this. You can actually see the mountain ridges from the property, and there’s this sense of being tucked away from everything while still having decent access to larger towns when you need supplies or want to explore.

The Accommodation

The room I stayed in was what I’d call “mountain cozy” — nothing fancy, but everything felt thoughtfully put together. The wooden furnishings actually complement the alpine setting instead of trying to fight it, and honestly, after a day of hiking, you just want a clean, comfortable space to crash. The beds are surprisingly good quality for a mountain chalet, and I mean that — I’ve stayed in plenty of places where you feel every spring.

Dining Experience

Here’s where Chata Katrina really won me over. The restaurant serves what I’d call elevated Slovak comfort food — think hearty portions but with actual attention to flavor and presentation. The goulash was probably the best I had during my entire Slovakia trip, and they do this thing with local trout that’s just… well, you’ll have to try it. The staff seemed genuinely proud of what they were serving, which always makes the food taste better somehow.

Why Guests Love It

Look, if you’re expecting spa treatments and marble bathrooms, this isn’t your place. But if you want authentic mountain hospitality in a region that most tourists completely skip over, Chata Katrina delivers in ways that surprised me. The family running it clearly cares about their guests — they gave me hiking recommendations that weren’t in any guidebook and helped me plan a route through the Tatra foothills that I’m still talking about. It’s the kind of place where you come for the mountains and leave with stories about the people you met along the way.
