Resort Sf Petru Overview
First Impressions
When I first pulled up to Resort Sf Petru in Tău Bistra, I’ll admit I wasn’t expecting much from what seemed like a remote spot in Romania’s Hunedoara County. But honestly, the moment you see this place nestled in the Carpathian foothills, you get it — this is exactly where you want to disappear for a few days. The four-star property sits at Poarta Raiului (literally “Heaven’s Gate”), and yeah, that’s not just tourism marketing speak.
Location & Setting
What strikes you immediately is how they’ve managed to feel both secluded and accessible. You’re about 30 minutes from Deva, which means you can grab supplies or explore the Corvin Castle if you want, but far enough out that you’re surrounded by actual wilderness. The Retezat Mountains loom in the distance, and there’s this pristine quality to the air that makes city folks like me realize how much we’ve been missing. I mean, when’s the last time you could actually hear silence?
The Accommodations
My room had this perfect balance of rustic Romanian charm and modern comfort — wooden beams overhead, but thankfully excellent Wi-Fi and a bathroom that actually worked properly. The beds are seriously comfortable, which matters more than you’d think after a day of hiking. What I appreciated most was the attention to local details without going overboard with the folk art theme that some mountain hotels push too hard.
Food & Dining
The restaurant here surprised me in the best way possible. You know how resort food can be hit-or-miss? Well, they’re clearly sourcing locally and the chef knows what they’re doing with traditional Romanian dishes. The ciorbă de burtă was better than what I’ve had in Bucharest, honestly. Breakfast spreads are generous without being wasteful, and they’ll pack you lunch if you’re heading out for day hikes — small touch, but it shows they understand their guests.
Why Guests Love It
That 9.6 rating makes perfect sense once you’ve been here. It’s the kind of place where staff remember your name by day two, and they genuinely seem to enjoy helping you plan adventures in the surrounding area. The spa facilities are modest but well-maintained, perfect for unwinding after exploring the nearby Retezat National Park. There’s decent parking right on-site, which matters when you’re this far from public transport. What really sells it though is the complete peace you feel here — no traffic noise, no crowds, just mountains and forest and the kind of quiet that actually lets you sleep properly for once.
