First Impressions

When I first pulled up to LOLO Park Resort, I honestly wasn’t sure what to expect from this four-star property tucked away in the Romanian mountains. But stepping out of the car at Lacu Roșu — that’s Red Lake for those keeping track — I immediately understood why this place has such incredible reviews. The resort sits right by the debarcader (the boat landing area), and you can literally hear the water lapping against the shore from the entrance.

The Setting

Look, I’ve been to mountain resorts before, but there’s something special about Lacu Rosu that photos just don’t capture. The lake formed naturally when a landslide blocked the Bicaz River back in 1837, and you can still see the ghostly tree trunks poking up through the red-tinged water — it’s haunting in the best possible way. LOLO Park Resort takes full advantage of this setting, with most areas offering views that’ll have you reaching for your camera constantly.

Accommodations & Comfort

My room faced the lake directly, and I mean, waking up to that view never got old during my stay. The accommodations are modern but not sterile — they’ve managed to keep that mountain lodge feel without sacrificing comfort. What impressed me most was the attention to detail; everything from the locally-sourced wood furniture to the quality linens felt thoughtful rather than just thrown together.

Dining & Atmosphere

The on-site restaurant deserves a mention because honestly, I wasn’t expecting much from resort dining in this remote location. But they’re clearly working with local suppliers and seasonal ingredients — the trout dishes are particularly excellent, which makes sense given where you are. The dining area opens onto a terrace where you can eat with the lake stretching out in front of you, and on clear evenings, the sunset reflection on the water is absolutely worth planning your dinner around.

The resort offers easy access to hiking trails around the lake, and the staff actually knows the area well enough to give you real recommendations, not just generic tourist suggestions. There’s decent parking right on-site, which matters more than you’d think when you’re hauling gear for mountain activities. What really sets LOLO Park Resort apart is how it manages to feel like a proper retreat without being completely cut off from civilization — you’re still close enough to explore the nearby Cheile Bicazului gorge or take day trips to other parts of the Carpathians. It’s that sweet spot between adventure and comfort that’s harder to find than you’d expect.
