Mykulychyn isn’t your typical tourist trap, which is exactly why I loved staying here. It’s this small mountain town where locals still nod hello on the street, and you can hear the Prut River flowing nearby. The cottage is positioned perfectly — close enough to feel connected to the community, but tucked away enough that you get those peaceful mountain mornings. I mean, waking up to the sound of birds instead of traffic? That’s worth the trip alone.

Inside the Cottage

The room I stayed in had this cozy, lived-in feel that you just can’t fake. Wooden beams, traditional textiles, and windows that actually open wide to let in that crisp Carpathian air. The restaurant here serves proper Hutsul cuisine, and I’m talking about dishes your grandmother would make if she happened to be from the Carpathians. The borscht was incredible — rich, earthy, with that perfect balance of vegetables and herbs. They source a lot of ingredients locally, which you can taste in everything from the bread to the seasonal vegetables. Don’t skip the varenyky if they’re on the menu; they’re made fresh and filled with local cheese that’ll spoil you for the frozen grocery store version forever.
